5 Most Common Makeup Mistakes You Might Be Making

Well I should start off by saying there really aren’t any official rules when it comes to makeup and if you love the way you wear your makeup then you can definitely ignore what I’m about to share. These are just some tips I share with my clients during makeup lessons and some things you could be doing differently to make your makeup stand out and look more polished. Here are some tips I can share from learning how my clients are doing their makeup over the years.

  1. Brows that are blocky and too dark. Even if your hair is jet black, your brows shouldn’t be. Dark brows often look too harsh on most faces so steer clear of black and use medium dark brown if you have black hair, chestnut brown if you have brown hair and taupe/blonde if you have blonde hair. You want to use the same color as your hair or at most one shade darker than your hair color. Some people even go one shade lighter than their hair color to create a softer brow, I personally love doing this and have noticed it can really bring out your eyes!

2.   Too much foundation. My clients often tell me that they struggle to find a good foundation that doesn’t make their skin look cakey or mask-like. Fist question I always ask is how much product they’re using and usually it’s way more than they should be using. Most foundations are medium to full coverage so you really need a few drops for your entire face and neck. If you need more coverage you can always add another layer to spot conceal. That way it looks more natural and not cakey.

3.    Forgetting skincare. No matter how good your makeup skills are or how expensive the makeup is, it wont look good if you don’t take care of your skin. Think of your skin as the canvas for a painting, you want a nice smooth canvas right? Make sure you’re washing your makeup off every night, cleanse, tone, serum, moisturize, and sunscreen in the morning.

4.    Not blending enough. Whether its eyeshadow or your bronzer, blending is so important to make it look seamless and natural. You definitely don’t want any harsh lines, blend blend blend!

5.     Too much concealer. This one is super common and I’m guilty of it as well! I’ve always had dark circles so I love concealer and lots of it! Only in the last couple of years have I noticed that less is more when it comes to concealer. When you apply too much concealer it actually has the opposite effect and will bring out all those little fine lines under the eye area that we all have. It can also make your under eyes look grey and more tired. I recommend just one “dot” under each eye and use a wet beauty sponge or soft brush to blend out. Finish off with some translucent powder to make it last all day!

And these are my top tips for some common makeup mistakes, let me know what you’d like to see discussed in the next blog post!
